Coastal style has come a long way from seashell prints and nautical stripes. (Although I will always love a stripe). In its more refined form, it’s about natural textures, a layered palette, and light-filled spaces that feel connected to their surroundings. This Bolivia, NC home takes on this quieter, more refined expression - balancing classic coastal elements with a more grounded aesthetic.

Nature as a Color Palette

The sandy, sun-bleached tones in this home immediately feel warm and grounded. Blonde engineered hardwood floors, reminiscent of driftwood, run throughout and add another warm, organic layer. Touches of soft whitewashed shiplap are a classic coastal element and feel right at home.

Layering Materials & Textures

The kitchen brings depth through a combination of creamy upper cabinets and deep, earthy wood-grain base cabinetry. This pairing adds subtle contrast without breaking the calm, natural palette. A matte black range hood serves as a modern punctuation mark—proof that coastal style doesn’t have to shy away from bold, grounding elements.

Designing for Light

In the great room, vaulted ceilings and large windows make space for natural light to pour in. The driftwood mantel over the fireplace creates a visual connection to the outdoors, while the covered porch just beyond offers a shaded spot to enjoy leafy, private views.

Retreat-Worthy Bedrooms

The primary suite takes on cooler coastal tones—soft greys paired with a white tray ceiling for a tailored, slightly moody feeling - like a summer storm. It opens directly to the porch, blurring the boundary between inside and and offering a breeze in cooler months. In the bath, a walk-in shower with dual showerheads features a slate-like tile that feel natural and spa-like.

Refined coastal design is about balance—muted, nature-inspired colors, tactile materials, and plenty of light. This home shows how those elements can come together in a way that feels elevated, serene, and deeply connected to its environment.
