Embrace the Chill

I wore a jacket, hat and gloves to go on walk the other day. It was 40º.

As my husband gave me the side-eye while I slipped on my gloves, I felt my transition from New Jerseyan to Southerner come full circle. Good-bye and good riddance to 40 degrees feeling like a lovely spring day. Now I shiver when temps drop below 75. And I couldn't be happier.

So even though we were a little bit freezing, my youngest and I decided to embrace the chill and enjoy a sunny winter day in Southport - the city we love.

First stop, Keziah Memorial Park to visit the Indian Trail Tree, swing on the benches and look for cardinals.

Fun Fact: the ancient oak at the center of the park was bent as a sapling to mark trails and other important places, giving it its distinctive shape.

Then on to Harper Library for a little reading and some unapproved wild rocking on the cool chairs in the kids' room. Harper Library offers such an incredible children's program, despite the restrictions brought on by Covid. We stopped at the desk for a take-home art project and the, newly introduced, Launch Pads - borrowable tablets pre-loaded with high-quality, ad-free apps that promote literacy. And let's face it, kids want anything in tablet form. Sold.

Up next, snacks. I had a significant number of options in my backpack, but Southport Market was just steps away...

I will NEVER pass up an opportunity to stop in to Southport Market. I browsed, taking mental inventory of everything I wanted to buy - which was everything - but little man was staaaarrrrrving so we ended up with some waters, a bag of Combos and Chili Cheese Fritos.

By far the best part of our trip was the lovely cashier who noticed our snack choices and gave me a life-altering tip: put Chili Cheese Fritos on top of tomato soup! Gah! That sounds UNREAL and will be happening this weekend.

The wind was biting, but the sun was warm so we made the short walk to the river. We've been here more times than I can count, but somehow it never gets old. We made a road in the sand, threw some shells in the water and breathed deep. Thanks Southport, for another perfect day.
